Eye infections are a common eye problem that affects individuals in summer. With the onset of monsoons, many individuals have been affected by an eye infection in 2023. In seasonal conjunctivitis symptoms (or pink eye symptoms), they experience eye pain, swelling, red eyes, and difficulty opening them. To reduce the conjunctivitis eye infection symptoms, you must take preventive measures and protect your eyes.
Speaking of eye infections, it remind us of a young girl named Arpita, she was a 15-year-old with 20+ medals in swimming. She was a state-level swimmer and would soon represent her state in national tournaments. About 60 days were left for her tournaments when something unfortunate happened. Arpita caught an eye infection due to her intensive swimming training.
She told her mother Meera about it, and without thinking twice, Meera brought her daughter Arpita to our clinic the very same evening. When we met Arpita, she was nervous on the inside but brave on the outside. Her mother, on the other hand, looked flushed.
During the appointment, Arpita briefly explained the pink eye infection symptoms she was facing, which included:
-
Redness
-
Blurry vision
-
Constant teary eyes.
These symptoms showed a clear sign of pink eye (AKA conjunctivitis), but we couldn’t proceed without conducting a thorough eye examination to detect Arpita’s eye infection. To perform the eye test, every piece of equipment was sterilised, and the room was sanitised. After that, a comprehensive eye exam took place to detect her eye infection vividly. The results confirmed that she had conjunctivitis (type- viral strains).
What is Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is commonly known as pink eye because the eye turns red/pink during the infection. The conjunctiva, a thin tissue present over the eye’s white area, is inflamed, which causes pink eye. Children are prone to get infected by pink eye since it is highly contagious and spreads in no time.
Even though pink eye might look harmful, they are unlikely to cause any vision damage, especially if detected early. With proper eye care and treatment, conjunctivitis can be cured.
Common Symptoms of Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is a common disease, but it is easy to ignore its initial symptoms, which include-
-
Swelling of the eyeball (specifically conjunctiva)
-
Pink or red colour of the eye
-
Tear production increases
-
Burning/itching sensation
-
Mucus/Pus discharge
-
Crusting of lashes in the morning
-
A feeling of a foreign element in the eyes, constant discomfort
-
Urge to rub the eyes constantly
Depending on what caused the condition, the symptoms may differ. If you experience symptoms of eye infection in 2023, schedule your appointment with our professionals!
After detecting conjunctivitis in Arpita’s eye, her mother felt relief as she thought something serious might have happened. We told them the details of her condition, and to further explain better, we have a brief about the different types of conjunctivitis.
5 Types of Conjunctivitis
-
Bacterial Strains:
Mostly infect one eye but can happen in both eyes. Mucus and pus will drip from the eyes.
-
Viral Strains:
This is the most common type of conjunctivitis and the most contagious one. It affects one eye at first and spreads to another eye in no time if not diagnosed in the early stage.
-
Allergic Types:
Causes constant teary eyes, itching and cause major redness in both eyes. Mucus and pus can also be present in this type of eye infection.
-
Bacterial Strains:
Eyes tend to put constant mucus and pus in this type of conjunctivitis.
-
Giant Papillary:
Mostly caused due to wearing contact lenses for a long duration/or due to artificial eyes. Doctors believe it is caused by an allergic reaction to a foreign body in the eye.
-
Ophthalmia Neonatorum:
It is a severe form of conjunctivitis that mostly affects newborns. If it is not treated in the early stages, Ophthalmia Neonatorum can damage the eyes and even cause blindness.
Once the condition was clear to both Arpita and her mother, the last question they had was- will Arpita be able to run for swimming nationals? Since conjunctivitis is not that harmful, but it is contagious, we asked Arpita to stay at home till the eye infection is completely cured. Afterwards, she can follow her routine without worrying about her eyes.
We asked Arpita to keep in mind certain things along with the medication for her eye infection:
- Wearing opaque glasses at all times (except when she is alone)
- Drinking enough water every day
- Cleaning her eye with a clean cotton cloth every few hours since eye conjunctivitis can also cause stye eye.
- Avoiding TV/mobile to avoid straining the eyes
After the session, Arpita and her mother seemed calm. We asked them to come back in a week for a regular check-up.
A week passed, and Arpita came for her regular check-up as we asked them to sit and relax. In the first look itself we could see the infection was completely gone – her red eye turned normal and Arpita looked as healthy as ever. She took all the precautions and didn’t miss a single dose of medication.
Now she was all set for her swimming championship!
