Dr. Sharad Patil is a pioneer in bringing many advanced eye treatment to Nashik – like first IOL implants Dr. Sharad Patil has completed MBBS and Post-Graduation from GMC Nagpur in 1984, further he did fellowship from Kiryu Eye Institute, Japan. He has a vast experience since 1987 in eye specialty and is the pioneer of various advance treatments in this region. He has performed more than 50,000 eye surgeries with excellent results. He is associated with various Institute and NGOs to provide expertise and treatments. He has presented various surgical techniques in live demonstration and instruction courses to ophthalmologists in state and national conferences.
He started Susheel Eye Hospital in 1987 at Nashik Road to provide comprehensive eye care to local population. Dr. Patil was instrumental to bring multispecialty eye care facilities in Nashik like IOL implants & phaco, eye bank & corneal transplants, medical and surgical retina service, LASIK refractive surgery with Femto & excimer lasers. Due to quality eye care, popularity among patients grew and he soon expanded activities to Nashik city at college road in 1997 where he provided comprehensive eye care in all specialties with his colleagues.
For capacity building, to provide comprehensive eye care under one roof with the help from team of doctors and colleagues Dr. Sharad Patil has started Susheel Eye Institute spanning upto 30,000 sq ft where all specialty of eye treatments are available.
Other than ophthalmology Dr. Sharad Patil is active athlete and sportsman. He has hobby of playing Badminton, is avid trekker, cyclist and marathon runner. He has done 10 Himalayan expeditions in various remote parts, ran 10 marathons successfully, did compete in international cycling events and races.
His hobby of trekking took him to remote parts of Sahyadri mountain to see remote padas and villages where he felt acute need of healthcare services to tribal’s. He formed NGO Kalpataru foundation & with group of like minded friends in year 1999, he started activity of primary health center & vision center at Dubewadi a tribal pada in (Trimbakeshwar tehsil of Nashik) to provide free healthcare & eye care treatments for poor & tribal population. Monthly camp was being conducted in a makeshift primary school rooms for 7 years.
He was influenced by work of G.Venkatasamy of Aravind eye institute Madurai where he attended a course of management training in eye care in 2006, which gave him broader view of perspective. He decided to increase community activities from his own funding. He started community eye care activities at his own hospital at Nashik Road in 2007. To create work force to support eye care he started training activities for technicians and doctors. In year 2012, capacity building programme of vision centers at Panchwati, Abhona (Tal. Kalvan) and Pimpalgaon were started. Foundation wants to run outreach program through 7 vision centres, 2 satellite hospitals & one tertiary care hospital.
He also runs a charitable eye hospital by the name of KALPATARU LIONS EYE HOSPITAL at satpur for the services of needy and poor and covers nashik and dang district in Gujarat.
