Chuo cha Optometry

Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous and regulated (licensed/ registered). Optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system (World Council of Optometry). India requires more than 40,000* optometrists in the years to come. Sensing the need for the society and to meet the requirement Eye Research Centre & Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in collaboration with Alagappa University started Dr. Agarwal’s Institute of Optometry on 28th July 2006.

Why choose Optometry?

Looking for a dynamic and challenging career which allows you to help people, achieve personal growth, community respect, has job flexibility and financial success and offers virtually unlimited opportunities.

Who is an Optometrist?

An optometrist is an independent primary health care provider who examines, diagnoses, treats and manages diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures. Among the services optometrists render are: prescribing glasses and contact lenses, rehabilitation of the visually impaired.

What do Optometrists do?

The old optometry was limited almost exclusively to fitting eyeglasses, whereas today’s optometrists examine and diagnose diseases of the eye. In addition to providing glass, Optometrist do provide corrective device such as contact lenses and low vision devices. As primary eye care practitioners, optometrists often are the first ones to detect such potentially serious conditions as diabetes, hypertension and arteriosclerosis. In fact, today optometrists work closely with ophthalmologists, neurologists, psychologists and other health care practitioners. Except for invasive procedures, the line between optometry and ophthalmology has become increasingly blurred and the two professions are gradually developing a symbiotic-if not sympathetic-relationship. As with medicine, optometry offers a variety of areas of specialization. Practitioners wishing to focus in areas other than general practice may select such specialties as contact lenses, vision therapy, and orthotics, paediatrics, low vision, sports vision, head trauma, learning disabilities and occupational vision. Optometrists may and often concentrate on one or two specialty areas of optometry.

Scope of Optometry

An Optometrist has the following career opportunities:

For the population of 980 crore approx., the ratio of qualified eye care professional to patients with eye problem is very poor, today the optical trade needs at least 20,000 qualified optometrist to man the dispensing optical outlets.
